Is this about you?
I’ve lost my job. What do I do first? →Let him tell you what the loss means
A lost job may mean lost income, colleagues, routine or a role he was proud of. Ask: “What is pressing hardest today?” The answer may be rent, telling his family or facing an empty Monday.
Avoid immediately calling it a blessing or promising a better job. You do not yet know what comes next. You can be present without putting a positive interpretation on it.
Offer one useful task
Ask whether he wants help reviewing a CV, finding an adviser or making a list of essential bills. Let him choose. Do not contact his employer, circulate his story or send his CV to people without permission.
Keep job leads relevant and manageable. One suitable introduction he wants is more useful than a stream of vacancies that makes him feel watched.
Point him towards advice early
Fair Work has information on ending employment and final pay. Encourage prompt qualified advice if he wants to challenge a dismissal; deadlines can be short and the applicable employment system matters.
Services Australia can explain income-support eligibility. The National Debt Helpline offers financial counselling for debt difficulties. Help him reach those services without guessing what he will receive or telling him how to use a payout.
Keep the friendship wider than the search
Invite him to an affordable ordinary activity. Ask about life beyond applications. Offer a check-in you can keep and avoid making employment progress the price of continued friendship.
If shame or distress becomes overwhelming, encourage appropriate support. Ephesians 2:10 is an optional reflection on worth and purpose beyond a job title. Do not use it to minimise the very real need for income or to promise a particular career outcome.
