Supporting a Mate Through Grief

Stay present after a death or significant loss, offer practical care and leave room for his own way of grieving.

General peer-support guidance. Not counselling, legal advice or crisis care. This content has not received independent clinical review.

Say something simple and true

Try: “I’m sorry. I don’t know the right words, but I’m here.” If someone has died, follow his lead about saying their name or sharing memories. Ask rather than assuming he wants to talk.

Do not compare losses, demand tears or tell him how he should feel. Quietness, practical activity and a moment of laughter do not tell you how much someone cared.

Offer care he can accept or decline

“Could I bring dinner on Thursday?” is easier to answer than a broad promise to do anything. Ask about preferences and dietary needs, and accept a no without making him explain.

Get permission before organising visitors, handling belongings or posting a tribute. Other family members may have different wishes. Your good intention does not authorise speaking for them.

Keep showing up after the busy days

The funeral or immediate arrangements are not a finish line. Ask whether he would welcome contact on a particular date, or company during a difficult routine. Follow through quietly.

Do not treat an anniversary as an obligation to discuss grief. A message can leave room: “Thinking of you today. Would company be welcome?” Let him decide.

Offer more support when needed

If grief is making daily life difficult or he wants help, suggest his GP or a grief-support service. He does not need to wait for an arbitrary milestone before seeking care. Immediate danger needs emergency help.

John 11:35 and Romans 12:15 offer optional Christian reflection on tears and presence. Avoid explaining the loss as God’s plan or using faith to rush him towards gratitude. Prayer, when welcome, can accompany practical companionship.
