I’m Exhausted, but I Feel I Can’t Stop

Perhaps you keep telling yourself that things will settle after this deadline, this roster or this family problem. Then something else takes its place.

General education and peer-support ideas, not treatment or individual legal advice. This content has not received independent clinical review. If you might act on thoughts of harming yourself or someone else, use urgent support now.

Before you begin

If you are running on empty, you deserve more than another instruction to push harder.

Look at the load honestly

Write down what you are carrying: paid work, unpaid work, caring, worry and commitments that other people barely see. Mark what is essential today, what can wait and what needs another person’s help. This is a conversation starter, not another performance test.

Try one specific request:

“I can complete these two tasks this week. I need help deciding what moves back.”

Where it is safe to do so, speak with a manager or another appropriate workplace contact. You do not have to disclose every personal detail to discuss capacity. If work is unsafe or the conversation could expose you to harm, seek advice before approaching it alone.

Get the exhaustion checked

Ongoing fatigue, poor sleep or difficulty functioning deserve a GP conversation. Burnout is one possible explanation, not a diagnosis to make from an article. Tell the doctor how long this has been happening and what has changed.

Keep one relationship within reach

When you are stretched, even replying can feel demanding. Send something small:

“I’m running low and have gone quiet. Could we have a short walk this week? I don’t need you to fix it.”

Choose one manageable adjustment today: an actual meal break, handing back an optional commitment or asking someone to share a task. Small changes will not resolve every workplace or family problem, but they can begin a more honest response.

A step today: reduce one avoidable demand and book support if the exhaustion is persisting.

Optional prayer: “Jesus, help me recognise my limits and ask for help without hiding.”

Words you can use

Let someone know.

I’m running low and have gone quiet. Could we have a short walk this week? I don’t need you to fix it.

Nothing is sent by this website. Choose the recipient yourself and only share what feels appropriate. For urgent danger, use emergency support instead of waiting for a reply.

If nobody replies

Try another safe person or a relevant support service. Do not wait for a text reply when you need urgent help. You can contact a professional even if you have never spoken about this before.
