Before you begin
You can ask for help before you have a convincing explanation for how it happened.
Start with one honest sentence
“My gambling is causing harm, and I’ve been hiding it. I need help taking the next step.”
You can say that to Gambling Help on 1800 858 858 or use Gambling Help Online. You do not need to begin by telling everyone you know.
Put barriers between the urge and the next bet
Ask a gambling counsellor about self-exclusion, available bank gambling blocks and a plan for the times you usually bet. BetStop covers Australian licensed online and phone wagering providers; it does not block every form of gambling.
Removing an app alone may not address the pattern. Consider what happens around it: payday, loneliness, drinking, sporting events or the urge to recover a loss. Bring those details into the conversation with a counsellor.
Face the money with support
Do not try to gamble your way out of gambling losses. List the debts and essential expenses honestly. The National Debt Helpline, 1800 007 007, can provide free financial counselling. Hope Economy may also provide a budgeting and debt-support pathway; visit hopeeconomy.org.au for current information.
If others have been affected, they deserve truthful information and control over their own finances. Get help preparing that conversation; do not ask them to prove their love by paying debts or keeping secrets.
Consider whether gambling is part of a wider cycle
If gambling is happening alongside serious alcohol or drug use, or if it has become a life-controlling pattern, tell a GP, counsellor or specialist service honestly. Treatment may involve counselling, a structured program or a rehab facility, depending on your circumstances.
You do not have to wait until you are at your lowest point. A rehab facility may provide a protected setting to interrupt the cycle and begin addressing the triggers, relationships and routines connected with gambling or substance use. Do not attempt to detox or stop substances suddenly without medical advice.
If you enter rehab or another treatment program, choose a mate who can support your commitment without enabling the behaviour. Ask for practical help during treatment and after you return home: transport, agreed check-ins, support for appointments, encouragement to avoid high-risk situations and companionship in ordinary activities. Your mate can stand beside you while still refusing to lend money, cover up harm or take responsibility for your recovery.
Choose one safe person for a practical request:
“I’m getting gambling support. Could we do something this weekend that doesn’t involve betting?”
If a setback happens, contact support again and examine what needs changing. Hiding it leaves you carrying the same problem alone.
A step today: contact Gambling Help and choose one suitable barrier with their guidance. If alcohol or drugs are also involved, mention that when you seek help.
If you cannot stay safe: call 000 for immediate danger or Lifeline 13 11 14 for crisis support.
