Practical support for you · Founder-reviewed content

I need support, but I don’t want to depend on one person

Build a small circle around real needs without telling everyone everything.

List one practical need, one connection need and one issue that needs qualified advice.

Different people can help in different ways

The person you enjoy a meal with does not have to understand every part of your history. A trusted friend might offer company; a qualified professional can help with an issue outside friendship.

You do not need a crowd. Start with one additional connection. If nobody comes to mind, a support service can help you explore options without requiring you to arrive with a team already assembled.

Give permission deliberately

You can say: “You can tell him I need a lift, but please don’t share the reason for the appointment.” Keep practical arrangements separate from sensitive information.

Do not feel obliged to join a group chat or provide updates to everyone. Avoid sharing another person’s private details while asking for your own support.

Ask for realistic commitments

Find out when people are actually available. Agree an alternative if a lift or call falls through. Your mate’s silence may mean he is unavailable; it is not a reliable measure of how much he cares.

Keep professional and emergency options separate from social plans. Friends are not an emergency roster. If life is in danger, call 000 rather than waiting for the group to respond.

Let the arrangement change

Some weeks you may need more assistance; other weeks, less. Tell people what is useful and what feels intrusive. You are allowed to revise consent and boundaries.

Optional reading: Ecclesiastes 4:9–12. Shared strength is not the same as surrendering your voice. Begin with one invitation to help with one task.

Words you can use

Let someone know.

Mate, you’ve helped me a lot. I’d like to build a bit more support around me so it isn’t all on you. Could we think about one other person or service I could contact?

Nothing is sent by this website. Choose the recipient yourself and only share what feels appropriate. For urgent danger, use emergency support instead of waiting for a reply.

If nobody replies

Try another safe person or a relevant support service. Do not wait for a text reply when you need urgent help. You can contact a professional even if you have never spoken about this before.

Further support and reading

Optional Scripture reading: Ecclesiastes 4:9–12. Practical examples and reflections are original writing; linked services have not endorsed this mission.
